I don't have WI yet but I've been planning on building my own system for a while. It's just the money part holding me back right now, but at least it gives me the chance to get the car tunned and running good without it. This way once i finally build a WI system, I'll be able to up the boost even higher and get some more power rather than just using it as a band-aid.

http://www.h20injection.com has some decent information, along with pictures of home made setups, but the site seems to be down right now.

Does anyone know what the cooling effects of water injection vs. alcohol injection are? Or a Mix of the two? I know molecule for molecule, water will cool better than alcohol, but I think I read somewhere that in a given space there will be more alcohol molecules than water. This may allow the alcohol to absorb more of the heat than the water will. Anyone know if this is true or what mix would result in the best cooling? Or even know how much energy 100% water can absorb and how much 100% alcohol can so maybe I can try to remember back to calc and figure out the best mixture...ha yeah right.

Then there is also the other effect of alcohol that water doesn't have - raising the octane a bit...

Don't forget the most important part -- keeping the water from freezing. D*mn it was cold this morning -- 15dF when I left for work.

Yeah in the winter months you definately need to have some alcohol to lower the freezing point.

I just read that a 50/50 mix of water and denatured alcohol (ethanol) is most effective. And a 50/50 mix by volume has a freezing point of -25* F, which would be plenty on Long Island.

Denatured alcohol is usually sold as 95% meaning it's diluted with 5% water, correct? So a mix of 45% water and 55% of denatured alcohol would work out to a 50/50 mix of water vs. alcohol?

Do water and alcohol mix? I'm picturing all the alcohol on the top of the tank and the water at the bottom, frozen.

I'm pretty sure they do mix. I mean the alcohol you buy in stores is not pure, it's diluted with water. Store bought Isopropyl alcohol is usually 30% water. The cheap blue washer fluid is half water and half methanol. Also, most of the stuff I've read about people running water or alcohol injection is that most people use a mix of the two. From this, I would say that they mix.

some info for you guys to read , if your wanna pursue water/alcohol injection
http://members.cox.net/stevemonroe/AlcoholInjMod.html

bottom of the page has a bunch of good links

I'm prolly gonna build a 2 stage system
one nozzle to activate at 5lbs and 2nd nozzle to come on at 10lbs
but 1st I have to try and move the battery to the rear of the car, to free up soem room up front.
Bad thing is that tracks want an exteiror turn off switch if you have a battery in the trunk.

Ken, what car are you building? For what it's worth I've heard a lot of people say to keep the WI systems simple. Just use a single stage system and activate it at higher boost. Otherwise it becomes a tuning nightmare. I wouldn't think you'd need the WI at 5psi unless you're running really high compression pistons? Are you turboing a NA motor?

I know one of the guys on the Galant VR-4 board went from 2 stage to 1 stage and said it wasn't worth the hassle.

yeap it's an NA motor,
don't wanna say anythign yet, I'll bring it out when it's done Smile
don't wanna jinx it (u know my luck)

unfortunatley, since I'm only working inconsistently,
the project has been very slow to fund.
been gathering parts for over a year now.
It's NA, but I just had the 60k belts done, and had a thicker headgasket put in.
It's driving like crap now, also guzzles ~4 gallons of gas just to get from Brooklyn to Queens Confused Sad
hopefully the turbo will be in within 2 more months
I still have to pick up some odd n ends for the oil lines
and a bung welded onto the dp.

thanks for the tip, I guess I'll build a 1 stage for now.
only reason I was considering 2 stage was the testimonilas posted up on
